A stunning example of early modern Japanese woodblock lithography, this richly colored print depicts a Heian-style court dance (Bugaku 舞楽)—a traditional performance once reserved for imperial ceremonies.
The composition presents a symmetrical, stage-like setting where noble dancers in layered junihitoe robes move gracefully between two enormous ornamental taiko drums, each lavishly decorated with phoenix patterns, golden crests, and crimson frameworks.

Behind them, the soft gradation of the background—fading from pale orange to silver gray—creates a sense of atmospheric depth, suggesting an early morning or twilight ritual within the imperial gardens.
The fine color layering, meticulous linework, and subtle shadowing demonstrate the exceptional craftsmanship of late Meiji and Taishō woodblock artisans, when printmakers began blending traditional ukiyo-e aesthetics with emerging lithographic techniques to achieve more delicate tones and realistic textures.

The margins bear publication details in Japanese, typical of art prints distributed as educational or cultural lithographs during the early 20th century, often used to promote appreciation of classical arts such as Bugaku and Gagaku (court music).

Despite minor creases and age toning, the artwork retains strong colors and an elegant surface sheen—an authentic survivor of Japan’s modernization era and its reverence for imperial tradition.
