This authentic Edo–Meiji era Japanese woodblock-printed book is the first volume of the celebrated illustrated travel guide Ise Sangū Meisho Zue, one of the most detailed and artistic records of the traditional pilgrimage routes to the Ise Grand Shrine (伊勢神宮) — the most sacred Shinto site in Japan.
Volume 1 begins with elegant cursive Japanese calligraphy (草書) and continues with finely detailed ukiyo-e style woodblock illustrations. It depicts imperial processions, aristocratic scenes, shrine rituals, flowing rivers, and landscapes along the journey to Ise. These opening chapters introduce the cultural, spiritual, and historical background of the Ise pilgrimage.
Printed using traditional woodblock techniques (木版印刷) and bound in classic stitched Japanese washo binding (和綴じ), this volume is a beautiful example of 19th-century Japanese bookmaking.
