About the Artwork
This striking piece, titled 「大嘗見」(Daijōken / Great Festival Vision), belongs to Yusui Toku’s “Unai” (うない) collection — a 1978 limited-edition series of 50 works celebrating Japanese seasonal rituals and the poetry of daily life.

The composition presents a child playfully gazing into a large wooden mask of Daikokuten, the god of prosperity and laughter, whose features are magnified in both power and warmth. The boy’s expression mixes awe and amusement, a reflection of the innocent human response to divine mystery.

Rendered in soft earth tones with intricate Kaga Yuzen–inspired kimono motifs, the print combines meticulous craftsmanship with philosophical undertones — suggesting the connection between ritual, play, and spiritual awakening.

Cultural Meaning
The title Daijōken refers to a “Grand Ceremony Vision,” evoking ancient imperial rites (Daijōsai) and the act of perceiving divinity in everyday experience. The juxtaposition of the child and the mask embodies the essence of the Unai philosophy — spirituality revealed through simplicity, and reverence expressed through joy.

The text on the verso mentions the legendary artisanship of Hida (飛騨), renowned for carving festival masks, and alludes to the Daikokuten mask as a symbol of abundance and good fortune.
