About the Artwork:
This elegant ukiyo-e print is a faithful reproduction of “Ten Physiognomic Types of Women: Girl Blowing a Glass Pipe” (婦人相学十躰 女吹玉の管), a masterpiece by Kitagawa Utamaro (1753–1806) — one of Japan’s most celebrated woodblock print artists of the Edo period.

In this composition, a refined woman is depicted in a moment of quiet contemplation, gently blowing a glass pipe (tama no kuda). Her checkered kimono and poised expression reveal Utamaro’s unmatched ability to capture grace, sensuality, and psychological depth through subtle detail and flowing linework.

Cultural and Historical Significance:
The series “Ten Physiognomic Types of Women” (Fujin Sōgaku Jittai) explores how character and personality could be read through physical features — a popular idea in Edo culture influenced by traditional physiognomy. Each print in the series presents a different type of woman, portrayed with elegance, individuality, and human warmth.

This reproduction was published by The Daily Yomiuri in collaboration with the Honolulu Academy of Arts, whose collection preserves many original Utamaro prints. The back page includes bilingual information explaining the artwork’s context, making it both educational and collectible.
